Dr. Merissa Nelms, DDS, CCA, is a general dentist and board-certified anaplastologist with a private practice in Athens, Georgia.
Dr. Nelms earned her undergraduate degree in studio art from the University of Pittsburgh, where she received recognition for her sculptural work. She later began clinical anaplastology training at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Department of Prosthodontics.
The multidisciplinary nature of anaplastology reignited a lifelong interest in dentistry and strengthened her passion for integrating art, science, and patient care. She continued her education at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry, where she worked part-time as a clinical anaplastologist within the UCSF Department of Prosthodontics while earning her Certified Clinical Anaplastologist (CCA) credential.
Dr. Nelms’ current practice focuses on comprehensive clinical dentistry with an emphasis on preventive care, esthetic dentistry, and interdisciplinary treatment planning. Prosthodontic treatment comprises a significant portion of her practice, where she combines functional rehabilitation with esthetic principles to provide individualized care. She also collaborates to provide treatment under sedation for pediatric patients, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and patients with dental anxiety.
Dr. Nelms is passionate about serving her community through volunteer work and dedicated several years to nonprofit dentistry, including helping establish a school-based dental clinic. She remains committed to lifelong learning through advanced continuing education, serving on the BCCA Board, local study club participation, and mentorship of pre-dental students through her practice.
